The Pulmonary Function Laboratory was established in 1958 by Professor Kirin. In this Laboratory have worked consecutively Dr. Ivan Kirin, Dr. Dimitar Iluchev, Dr. Stephan Kostianev, Dr. Ivan Yanev, Dr. Blagoy Marinov. Currently Professor Stephan Kostianev is at the head of the Laboratory and Dr. Blagoi Marinov, Dr. Stoilka Mandadzhieva and Dr. Kiril Terzijski are working there. Diagnostic apparatuses used were: in the beginning of the 1960s – Spirograph of Kirin-Samardzhiev and Metabograph of Fleish; in the beginning of the 1970s – Pulmoanalyzer type 44 A-Z Godart; from the beginning of the 1980s – Pneumoscreen and TransferScreen by E.JAEGER Company and at the end of the 1990s – MasterScreen by the same Company. These apparatuses were operated by the specialists: Anna Solinadzhieva (during the 1960s), Margarita Boneva (during the 1970s), Yanka Chaneva (during the 1980s), and Dimka Ilieva (during the 1990s and currently).
At present the Laboratory is the most contemporary one in the country. A complete analysis of the following groups of functional parameters is performed here: lung volumes, forced inspiration and expiration, tidal breathing analysis, bronchoprovocation and bronchodilatation tests and diffusion. On the basis of the parameters values an overall evaluation of respiratory tracts state and gases interchanging alveolar respiratory surface is made. Patients needing complete respiratory function analysis are examined in the Laboratory annually. The Laboratory operates in compliance with the world standards of the Pulmonary Function Testing and Diagnostics. A Bodyplethismograph sector was added to the Laboratory in the 1980s which closed the cycle of Pulmonary Function Diagnostics.
